Hi Shipmates,

I'm Don Massey and after leaving the USS Manatee in March of 1964, I returned to civilian life in my home town of Claremore, Oklahoma.  I went to work in the steel construction helping to build large crains and oil derricks.  After about 2 and a half years I was laid off work in the industry.  Thinking it would be better to have a more reliable job, I went to work for the City of Claremore as an electric lineman.  This was a steady job but it didn't seem to leave much chance for advancement.  I remained in this job for about another two and a half years during which I met the lady of my dreams and made her my wife.  Her name is Mindy and we have now been married for 36 years.  We have one son, a policeman in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.  Looking for a better employer, I went to work for Grand River Dam Authority as an electric lineman.  Again I had to start at the bottom and work my way up but the hard work and determination finally paid off, I was promoted to foreman and was able to hang up my climbing tools.  I worked for the Grand River Dam Authority for 29 years and was able to retire 6 years ago at the ripe age of 57 and have loved my retirement more than I can express.  I am now so busy that I don't know how I ever had time to work.  I am very much involved in the activities of the local Masonic lodge and volunteer helping handicapped children ride horses for therapy. This is very rewarding as there is always something to do.  I LOVE THE RETIRED LIFE.

In the past I have done a lot of fishing and hunting but lately it seems like I just don't have the time.  I also have a 24 by 40 wood working shop that I enjoy spending time in, that is when I find the time.  I have just recently found the Manatee website and am looking forward to the reunion in 2005.  See you all there!!!!!!
